Broiler Hatching Eggs
  • The average size for a broiler hatching egg farm is 9421 hens producing 1.4 million eggs annually.
  • The smallest farm produces 550,800 eggs every year and the largest produces 3 million eggs.
  • Manitoba's hatching egg production for 2009 was 31.72 million eggs, down 4% from 2008. Manitoba hatcheries imported 8.86 million eggs, up 48.34% from 2008.
  • In 2009, locally produced eggs accounted for 78.7% of the total eggs set at Manitoba hatcheries.
  • The average hatchability of Manitoba broiler hatching eggs was 80% in 2009. Import egg hatchability was 80.9%.
  • Hatching egg producers are paid based on the number of saleable chicks. Producers currently receive 45.0 cents for every saleable chick.
  • Manitoba has 4 hatcheries.
Broiler Chickens
  • Manitoba has 118 chicken farms and most are located in the southeast corner of Manitoba.
  • The average farm raises 59,315 kg of chicken every 7 weeks.
  • The largest farm raises 610,600 kg of chicken every 7 weeks. The smallest farm raises 30,000 kg every 7 weeks.
  • Most chickens are ready to market when they weigh just under 2 kg. It takes 32-36 days for chickens to reach this weight. These chickens are called "broilers".
  • Approximately 99.5% of chicken produced in Manitoba falls into the broiler weight category.
  • Total chicken production in 2009 = 42.4 million kg eviscerated (no change from 2008).
  • Production in Manitoba increased 21% from 1999 to 2009.
  • Manitoba has 4.17% of the total Canadian chicken production. Ontario and Quebec have the greatest market share at 32.5% and 27.6% respectively.
  • The average price paid to a producer for 1 kg of live chicken in 2009 in Manitoba = $1.4636.
  • Manitoba has 2 major chicken processing companies - Dunn-Rite Food Products Ltd and Granny's Poultry Co-operative.
In Canada
  • Canada ranks 13th on the list of leading chicken producing countries. In 2008 Canada raised just over 1 billion kilograms . The United States tops the list, producing 16.6 billion kgs in 2008. China and Brazil are second and third with 11.9 billion kgs and 11 billion kgs respectively.
  • The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for chicken in 2008 was 128 (1992=100). The CPI for all foods was 115.7. In comparison the American 2008 CPI for chicken parts was 199.8. and 214.1 for all foods.
  • Chicken is the meat and poultry leader in Canada with 34% of total meat consumption (2008). In the United States, chicken also leads with a 35.9% share of total meat consumption (2008).
  • Canadians ate 31.7 kg of chicken per person in 2008. Canada had the 11th highest per person chicken consumption in the world in 2008. United Arab Emirates led the world with 66.2 kg per person followed by Kuwait (59.7 kg) and the USA (44.1 kg).
  • In Canada in 2008, 62% of chicken consumed was purchased at a retail outlet. 24% was purchased from a fast food outlet, 9% from a full service restaurant and 5% was served in hotels and institutions.
